Josh Duhamel Is Here to Make Sure You're Ready for Super Bowl Sunday

Josh Duhamel sits outside on his back porch eating chips and dip when we connect by Zoom. ”We can talk about snacks all day,” he brims, crunching into a crispy thin potato snack. “I’ve been eating this stuff too much, to be honest. It’s so good. I grew up on chips and dip, so this is perfect.”

Duhmel is referencing his partnership with Heluva Good! Dips for this year’s Super Bowl, a collaboration bringing a longtime snack enthusiast together with one of the most storied brands in dip history. As part of their partnership, Heluva Good! Is giving away a “Sideline Snacker” just in time for the big game.

Throughout our conversation, Duhamel explains the Heluva Good! partnership, discusses his upcoming projects, and reveals his strategy for maintaining a balance between his work life and his personal life.

AskMen: How have you merged your football past with your life long love for snacking?

Josh Duhamel: I grew up watching football and chips and dip have been a part of my life since I was a kid. So I got a call from Heluva Good! Dips about this “Sideline Snacker,” which is this remote control device — for those who don’t want to lose their spot on the couch — that’s sort of an [ottoman] with a built-in fridge that brings snacks to you. It’s like this little robot is the future of snacking.

Like those little food delivery robots you see rolling down the sidewalk in Los Angeles.

It’s supposed to be here any minute and I’m starting to wonder if it’s even real or if they’re just pulling my leg. I was like, “Can I have one?”, and they were like, “Well, you can win one.” You just have to go to www.heluvagood.com/giveaway. I don’t know if I’m out of the running since I’m the spokesperson for it, but I’m waiting to see if they’ll make me one.

Have them hook it up.

Just to say that I have one and can be like, “Here, you want me to bring you something?” [Makes noise of robot delivering snacks]

Well then it becomes a talking point, too. You go over to Josh’s house, you’ve got access to the Snacker, you might have friends coming over just for that.

Only in America. God bless America.

You say you grew up on chips and dip. How do those early days of snacking compare to today?

Honestly, it hasn’t changed much. There’s always been this [points to chips] and this [points to dip]. For my fancy friends, I’ve got the buffalo chicken stuffed jalapeno poppers. For my healthy friends, I’ve got vegetables. There’s a football-shaped cheesy-bacon bread twist thing that we’re going to bring out later. But literally, one of my earliest memories is the Heluva Good! Dip and chips, so this was the perfect partnership for me.

The difference [between snacking] now versus then is that now it almost feels like The Jetsons or Wall-E or something with this little robot bringing you snacks.

Was snacking something that brought the family together back in the day? What was the snacking dynamic in your household like?

It was always beer, it was always chips, it was always dip... burgers, hot dogs, and everything else. It hasn’t really changed much.

I think part of the reason I love football season so much, and why I love postseason football especially, is because there’s something that feels like home about it. My dad played football, I played football, and it was really part of my life forever, so I’ve become a really huge fan of the game. I love watching these young quarterbacks do what they do.

I’m a pretty simple dude at the end of the day, and [football] is one of those things.

Though in terms of simplicity, it seems you’re currently involved in a multitude of different projects.

I’ve got The Thing About Pam coming out March 7th with Renée Zellweger, which is really cool. It’s a six-episode series about this crazy woman played by Renée. Then I have Shotgun Wedding coming out with J-Lo in late June or early July. Then I’ve got a movie called Bandit about this bank robber from Canada, and then a movie called Blackout, which I did in Mexico City.

I’m getting married in September it looks like, which is really exciting, and I’m spending as much time out in the woods at my cabin as I can.

I’ll be in Los Angeles for a while now working on Mighty Ducks with Lauren Graham who I’m a huge fan of. It’s been a busy year, and this [next] one is going to be a busy one, but at least I get to be home for a bit.

With everything you have going on, how do you find time to juggle both your work and personal lives successfully?

Well, I’m afraid I didn’t do a great job of it last year. I felt like I worked too much. That’s one of the things I really try to work at — balance — and being as present as I can for my son. Being home helps, rather than me flying back and forth or him flying out to me. I’d rather just be home for a little bit.

It’s something that I’m working on because it is important. I think being at the cabin I mentioned earlier is something that kind of balances us all out. We just love going out there and getting on a jet ski, playing in the sand, making a campfire, or getting on the tractor. [It's] the basic stuff for me as a dad — my girl and I are both from out there— and it’s sort of our connection to home. For my son, it gives him a connection to what I had growing up. It’s not just Los Angeles life, but also some country life.
